Linux – BackupPC: How to include and exclude in the same directory

I have set up BackupPC on a CentOS server, and it works great.

The only problem I have is; How do I exclude everything in /media/ except /media/ncpvolues/ ?

This approach doesn't include /media/ncpvolumes/ as hoped.

The reason you have a problem here is that you are trying to back everything up using one share (in this case /).

What you need to do is have at least two shares: one for / and one for /media/ncpvolumes/

Then for the / share exclude dev/ proc/ tmp/ mnt/ media/ var/named/chroot/proc var/cache as you have done so in your existing configuration. Make sure media/ is excluded.

Then for the /media/ncpvolumes share do not exclude anything.

That will have the result of backing up everything in /media/ncpvolumes but nothing else in /media.

I don't think scp alone can do what you ask. You should investigate rsync instead.

I use it for backups with a filter to exclude files with names that don't work on NTFS volumes

# the exclude is to filter out files with invalid names on NTFS
/usr/bin/rsync -rgqoxD --delete --exclude='*[:\?]*' /home/andrewr/src /filer001/syncd/src

you can also pass it the name of a file that contains the files to exclude (--exclude-from=file)

Edit: Here's a sample command line that works for your example:

cd src; find . -type f -name "*.htm" | rsync -av --files-from=- . host:dir

I don't think you can use -F and --files-from together since the intent of --files-from is to provide an exact specification of which files will be transferred.

As an alternative you can use a remote target to --files-from which I think will be better than having two places to define your backup. You can write --files-from=:/path/to/dirlist (note the colon) and the path specified will be looked up on the remote server instead of the local one. With this method you can keep both your includes and excludes in the same file on the remote server.
