Linux – Copying from external device very slow

i am running debian lenny on my machine. The problem is when I try to copy data from usb device to my hdd, The transfer rate is very very slow, Even if i put 10MB file to copy it takes arround 15min to cp to hdd. But the same usb device it i connect to laptop it works fine. Even it was problem when etch was there, i though it may get solved after upgrading to lenny. Is there any solution for this..

Which usb module is loaded? uhci or ehci

lsmod | grep hci

The output should look something like this:

uhci_hcd               22404  0 
ehci_hcd               34688  0 
usbcore               134576  5 oss_usb,usbhid,uhci_hcd,ehci_hcd

If it only shows uhci and not ehci, then the usb 2.0 drivers just aren't loading

Is this running on one of dell's raid controllers (looks like it would probably be a PERC/4something). If so, the megaraid kernel driver doesn't seem to react or report drive problems at all, you need to install Dell's OpenManage stuff to see what is going on at the hardware level. This thread suggests once you install it you'd use commands like

omreport storage controller 
omreport storage adisk controller=0 
omreport storage vdisk controller=0

Here is Dell's documentation on omreport.

The newer Megaraid SAS controllers (PERC/5) can use MegaCLI alone to manage them.

Linux – iscsi slow read speed

Your switch is likely unable to handle the 9000 MTU so it's having to re-transmit a lot of packets. Change your MTU to the default 1500 and see if the speed improves.

Other factors include host load (doesn't matter if /dev/null or not, network adapter can still be loaded) and the maximum rate of the storage's drives. Since it's at ~4MB/s, I doubt it's a drive bottleneck but your router discarding tons of packets due to too high MTU.
