Linux – How to block torrent downloads by squid

I am using linux (RHEL 5) server with few windows xp client machines ,

I would like to block torrent downloads at clients,

I am using squid 2.6 stable.

How can i do this by squid ?
Is there any other options for to do
this ?

You can define a blacklist for different files. All you have to do is blacklist .torrent files.

But in reality you should have a decent firewall capable of blocking Bit Torrent ports... Any firewall will do this with a bit of configuration and tweaking.

If you really don't want a firewall, you could always use an IDS such as Snort to watch the traffic and notify you of any BT traffic.

Just to add on the above question.

You could use iptables with user matching to color the packets like so:

iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -p tcp -m owner --uid-owner someuser -j MARK --set-mark 100

And then use 'tc' to limit on a per user basis.

Where will these keywords exist? If the things you want to block on are part of the URL then you can use a squid regex acl.

If you want to block based what makes up the content of the request you would need to be using something like dansguardian.

If you just want to use a block based on URL blacklists of a certain category you can use squidguard combined with one of the several blacklist databases.
