Linux – Installing PHP extensions on Linux

Please bear with me; I'm a developer, not a server admin. My company wants to explore using Magento. They've handed me a pre-configured Linux server with apache and PHP installed, but when I try to run the Magento setup, it tells me that there are PHP extensions that need to be loaded. I can edit the php.ini file, but have no idea where to get the extensions or how to install them, and there's no one here who knows, either.

Can anyone give me a hand? I need the PDO_MySQL, mcrypt, and GD extensions. I've searched and found sites that talk about downloading from the terminal and compiling code, but it's all way over my head. Is there an easy way to do this?

Have a look at http://pear.php.net/

Often Linux system have the pear application in repository, so you would just need to run a command for each extension you'd like to install.

There is an extensions directory defined in /etc/php/php.ini and in that directory is the shared objects, so delete or move them somewhere else and they wont be loaded when apache loads the php module

Edit/Expansion: at the bottom of your php ini there should be an include /path/*.so with a comment along the lines of "load all shared objects" this confirms that your (slightly different from compiled) ubuntu version of php is loading extensions this way.

Ubuntu – PHP.ini does not load

Check the value for the "--with-config-file-path=" option. It should be /etc not /etc/php.ini. It seems that Apache is trying to load /etc/php.ini/php.ini and that's why doesn't find the file.

If this doesn't work, you could strace to check which files are opened by php:

strace -f -e trace=open php --ini

The answer will help you to find out where is php looking for php.ini files. This is the output in one of my servers:

10833 open("/usr/bin/php-cli.ini", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
10833 open("/etc/php-cli.ini", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
10833 open("/usr/bin/php.ini", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
10833 open("/etc/php.ini", O_RDONLY)    = 3
