Linux – Minimalistic linux distro for Virtualbox

I want to run some Linux stuff on my XP development machine which clearly doesn't work too well in their Windows specific versions.

What would be an appropriate Linux distro to install on Virtualbox if I am concerned about harddrive and ram usage? I do not need any Gnome or graphical interface…

I would suggest a Debian minimal install.Lenny is one of the most stable distributions out there, and you can always switch to testing if you want to try something more experimental. The basic install takes about 1.5GB of space and around 100MBs of RAM.

I've had a similar issue and had to use the 'taskset' tool to set the affinity for CPU0; it appears a number of folks have the same problem. Here's a concise artticle:

On my system I did it a little more directly than 'taskset -c 1' as they list; I found the direct command in the process list that launches the exact VM I want (which includes the VM's unique SID) and created a simple helper script to run it, like so:

#!/bin/sh
/bin/taskset 0x00000001 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox -comment WindowsXP -startvm a7487a75-6119-4a14-a8ea-195ce2906a4b &

This was on Fedora, the Ubuntu paths might be a slight bit different so adjust as necessary.

Outside/in addition to ensuring you have the "Guest Additions" installed, you might also look into switching between the available virtual NIC types (AMD vs. Intel) for possible improvements.
