Linux – Redhat: Enabling proxy for specific IP addresses only

I have a server that ordinarily does not require a proxy to connect (e.g.) to any URL on the internet. However some specific systems (IP addresses) I need to connect to via a specific proxy.

My question is how I can specify the proxy per IP-Address / subnet without disrupting the normal configuration where no proxy is required.

I am aware of the following variables that can be set, however this operates on an exclusion basis to access the proxy rather than an inclusion basis:

export http_proxy=http://my-proxy.tld:8080
export https_proxy=https://my-proxy.tld:8080
export no_proxy=127.0.0.1,localhost,192.168.1.123, ...

The server in question is a RedHat V7.1 box.

Any ideas will be much appreciated.

You can use Squid. If you want a smaller footprint installation and smaller configuration files, you could also try Tinyproxy.

Jessica, as you suggested in your edit, you can definitely use mod_proxy to do this. You would install Apache HTTPD on the server with the external IP and configure the reverse proxy to pass requests based on Locations defined in the httpd.conf file.

I really like this page as it gives an in-depth discussion of this topic while being a bit more helpful than just reading the configuration reference.

I suspect you can possibly configure mod_jk to do this, but I have not attempted that.

ProxyPass /mywebserver1 http://10.1.1.1
ProxyPass /mywebserver2 http://10.1.1.2
ProxyPassReverse /mywebserver1 http://10.1.1.1
ProxyPassReverse /mywebserver2 http://10.1.1.2

You should read the httpd docs about ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse directives. The ProxyPassReverse is especially interesting as it is a critical part of "cleaning up" the proxied traffic so that the apps being proxied don't have to know that they're being proxied. You may also be interested in mod_proxy_html

I'd try one of the following :

add

domain example.com
search example.com

to /etc/resolv.conf

Or add

11.22.33.44    projects.example.com projects

to /etc/hosts

Any of these are likely to solve the dns issue.
