Linux Server: Cannot upload files to any directory

I am working with an ubuntu server running apache2 but I can't upload files, but I can log in to ssh and
touch test.txt
When I log in to the server with filezilla and try to add a file to /var/www I get a 550: Permission denied error.

The server admin is away so asking is not a possibility but he did give me sudo privs before he left. He set up the server in a hurry so is there something I can do that he may have forgotten that is basic or advanced?

It's the issue with others, which is 0, nothing permitted. I assume you logged in server with permitted user but ftp user is probably stuck with others permission.

As root:

mkdir /var/www/files
chown root_sftp:sftp_users /var/www/files

Can your SFTP user put files into what will appear under the chroot as /files? I don't recall immediately, but I think you will not be able to write against the apparent / because of the chroot jail.

Ah, it's actually in the man page for sshd_config:

 ChrootDirectory
         Specifies a path to chroot(2) to after authentication.  This path, and all its components, must
         be root-owned directories that are not writable by any other user or group.

So, what you specify as ChrootDirectory in /etc/ssh/sshd_config can't be writeable. You acn rethink your directory setup, so what the document root for your web site is /var/www/example.com, where the example.com subdirectory is writeable by the SFTP user.

If you are using Ubuntu the Apache user will be www-data, but if you are using CentOS the webserver user will be Apache, so can you grep and see whether Apache user exist or not:

grep apache /etc/passwd

If the apache user exist you can use :

chown -R apache:apache /var/www/html
