Linux – setting server hostname

I'm using ubuntu 10.04 on my server and I'm looking to set the hostname.

Looking around it seems I have to set this in the /etc/hostname file, but on my system I do not have one.

Typing hostname does return a value

Is there anywhere else this could be set?

On Ubuntu server that is the correct location. You just need to add the hostname string only to the file, example:

echo my-ubuntu-server-name > /etc/hostname and reboot.

For those who don't have an account on the forums (or don't wish to login):

if your main issue is not to ping but to ssh, you can create/edit your ~/.ssh/config adding lines like these:

Host fakehost1
  Hostname real-hostname

Host fakehost2
  Hostname real-hostname2

Host fakehost3
  Hostname real-hostname3

That is not a valid DNS hostname (there is no .home top-level domain). I would recommend sticking with the default "localhost.localdomain 127.0.0.1" unless you have a valid need for others to resolve to your host. At the very least, have someone more experienced with TCP/IP networking come show you the ropes.

For now you should be able to just point your browser to the host by IP address.
