Linux – TigerVNC – how to change quality

I'm using tigerVNC and I'm quite satisfied with it but I can't seem to be able to change the quality level. Appending arguments behind $vncviewer like QualityLevel=4 doesn't help, because it is choosing it automatically based on your bandwidth

CConn:       Throughput 1275 kbit/s - changing to quality 6

And quality 6 is way too much. More over I don't have 1275 kb/s but 1024 kb/s.

It renders incredibly slow. Can't use it like this.

So the parameter that turns this feature off is -AutoSelect=0

Manual says that

  AutoSelect     - Auto select pixel format and encoding. Default if           
                   PreferredEncoding and FullColor are not specified.          
                   (default=1)

but it also affects QualityLevel among others

As of GNU coreutils 7.5 released in August 2009, sort allows a -h parameter, which allows numeric suffixes of the kind produced by du -h:

du -hs * | sort -h

If you are using a sort that does not support -h, you can install GNU Coreutils. E.g. on an older Mac OS X:

brew install coreutils
du -hs * | gsort -h

From sort manual:

-h, --human-numeric-sort compare human readable numbers (e.g., 2K 1G)

Linux – Vnc bandwidth to quality & compression level

I'd recommend Tight encoding, maximum compression level (which is 9 in TightVNC-compatible viewers), and JPEG quality level 6. That should work but updates may go slowly as bandwidth is quite low.

Using -nojpeg option may increase bandwidth requirements (up to 10 times if photo-like graphics would be transmitted, less otherwise).
