Microsoft Security Essentials for servers

Microsoft Security Essentials seems to be a fine, lightweight AV solution, and it's getting a lot of positive reviews. Microsoft is explicitly positioning it as a solution for home PCs, but are there any reasons not to run it on a server? We use McAfee Total Protection Service on our desktops, but it's not entirely compatible with the server, and in any event the software firewall and link protection features aren't necessary on the server anyway. We have a single SBS 2008 server running things, so I want to make sure it has decent protection. Is MSE the answer?

if you care about licensing, then - no.

Use. You may install and use any number of copies of the software on your devices in your household for use by people who reside there or for use in your home-based small business.

You may have allready applied these, but there are a couple of updates that can affect this. Firstly, have you installed update rollup 1 for SBS? This has a fix for clients not reporting properly.

Secondly, have you installed update kb943729 on the clients. This updates group policy preferences for the clients to work with server 2008 and has been know to solve this issue.

Microsoft Security Essentials is not licensed for business use. (Source) That being said it can be used in a home or home office, so installation via the network may still be an option.

You can extract the download using this command:

mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-xp.exe /x

Then you can use psexec to silently install the msse.msi. Something similar to below.

psexec \\computername msiexec "\\server\share\Pathtomsse.msi" /s /runwgacheck

or if you have a text file with all the computers on their own line like:

computer1
computer2
computer3

your command would be

psexec @c:\Computerlist.txt msiexec "\\server\share\Pathtomsse.msi" /s /runwgacheck

Please note I haven't actually tried the silent install, but that should get you on the right track.
