AFAIK, the Linux implementation of NFS doesn't support inotify-like event notification from the server-side — is there a workaround, patch, or alternative solution that can produce the same data?

According to this mail, running an inotify watcher on the server exporting the filesystem should catch when clients write to the filesystem.

Really, I'd recommend trying it. I find that it's usually best to give things a shot oneself, even if success seems unlikely (as long as there is no harm in doing so, of course).

That sounds like a job for the automount(8) daemon. See the autofs(5) man page (from the autofs rpm) under "Replicated Server". I believe if you add a line like

fileserv host1,host2:/server/export/point

to /etc/auto.misc on your client and (re-)start the autofs service, your NFS storage will show up under /misc/fileserv. You could add -ro as mount options if you want to mount read only (or other mount options of course).

Try to use this Git setting, which makes a huge performance difference on NFS shares:

git config core.preloadindex true

This can speed up operations like git diff and git status especially on filesystems like NFS that have weak caching semantics and thus relatively high IO latencies. When enabled, Git will do the index comparison to the filesystem data in parallel, allowing overlapping IO’s. Defaults to true.
