Nginx – centos 7 : nginx givers error when enabling log

In CentOS 7, if I put the following line in my nginx.conf:

error_log /usr/share/nginx/wordpress.itzgeek.com/logs/error.log;

I get the following error when restarting nginx:

nginx: [emerg] open() "/usr/share/nginx/wordpress.itzgeek.com/logs/access.log" failed (13: Permission denied)

user is set to 'nginx' in my nginx.conf

and I restart nginx using this command: systemctl status nginx.service
Also Im logged in as root.

nginx master process is running as root and worker is running as nginx.

Any ideas? I don't understand what's wrong..

Like the log message said it's likely a permissions problem. Change it to a location that nginx can write to, something like this

error_log /var/log/nginx/wordpress.itzgeek.com/error.log;

This doesn't solve your problem, but in the future, if you do

cat /dev/null > /file/you/want/to/wipe-out

you will copy over the contents of the file with nothing, and keep all permissions in tact.

Not nginx-speicific, but Additionally, make sure you are running the application as the user it is supposed to run as. If you ever ran it as root, all the permissions are going to be owned by root, so other users won't be able to run it.

Or, you can change the nginx.log file permissions so they match your current user which you use to start nginx:

chown your_user /var/log/nginx/error.log

I suggest you add this permisions to the entire nginx log dir

chown -R your_user /var/log/nginx/
