Nginx – Set max_fails and fail_timeout for All Servers in Upstream

All of the examples I've seen of using upstream (for load balancing) in nginx look like this:

upstream  backend  {
  server   backend1.example.com:8080          max_fails=3  fail_timeout=30s;
  server   backend2.example.com:8080          max_fails=3  fail_timeout=30s;
  server   backend3.example.com:8080          max_fails=3  fail_timeout=30s;
}

It seems repetitive to re-set max_fails and fail_timeout for each backend, when typically they are always the same. Is it possible to set max_fails and fail_timeout for all of the backend servers at once?

Specify proxy_upstream_fail_timeout and proxy_upstream_max_fails in your server {} config

You can have multiple location statements each with it's own upstream

location /cas/ {
  proxy_pass              http://lb; 
  }

location /web/ {
    proxy_pass              http://2b;    
  }

location /mail/ {

You can also use if statements that checks the $request_uri variable and uses that to decide what upstream to pass the request to.

if ($request_uri ~* "^/(.+?)/context")
{
  proxy_pass   http://domain.com$request_uri;
  break;

NGINX Load Balancer – Rewrite to Listen on Port

Since your server block is listening on port 88 and you used a relative URL in your rewrite, nginx uses port 88 in the resulting URL.

To fix this, specify the complete URL. For example:

        rewrite  ^/en/businesses$             http://mysite.com/en/business permanent;
