Php – Upgrading to PHP 5.3 using Plesk or SSH

Update: Apparently RHEL 5.6 includes PHP 5.3, so this will be showing up natively for CentOS soon.

The problem here is that the packages you are installing have a different name (php53 instead of php), but they attempt to install the same files...hence the conflicts. This isn't necessarily the best way to put the packages together, but I don't know if there are better packages available so we'll ignore that.

To remove your currently installed packages:

# yum remove php-cli php-common php

So, in general, yum remove <list of packages> will remove the packages. And of course, yum list installed to see a list of installed packages (or rpm -qa).

Depending on the server operating system / linux flavour it might be as easy as: yum update php or apt-get install php

Be aware this will update you to the latest version of php not necessarily 5.3, also be aware this might break things to proceed with caution!

if your running a redhat based system you should also be able to find a PHP 5.3 RPM which you can install with rpm -uvh rpmname.rpm if you need a specific version of php that yum can't provide.
