RDP Console / Admin Session

When i connect to Windows 2003 machines i can use the /console switch and essentially get a third remote administration session on the server.

This doesn't seem to work on Windows 2008 R2, only 2 sessions are allowed. Has this feature been removed ?

Thanks, but my question isn't about the switch but about the behaviour of Windows 2008 v Windows 2003. Although, it's good to note the switch is releated to the client.

Windows 2003 essentially allowed 3 simultaneous connections in remote administration mode if one of them used the console switch.

Windows 2008 seems to have removed this as regardless of which switch we use we can only get two users on.

Yes. Use the /admin switch now.

/console is ignored on newer versions of RDP. /admin is ignored on older versions.

So you can use:

mstsc /admin /console .....

poor solution: make a login script. If the connection is not console, logoff:

logoff 1

This will logoff session 1. If you are connecting in rdp through the console, you are session 0 and not 1

you can detect better using qwinsta and a script to check output of it.

Increase number of allowed remote desktop connections

If you run into the problem of not being allowed into the server because the connections are full (and you know it's due to connections left hanging), you can use the command prompt commands qwinsta and rwinsta to query and terminate sessions.

Like so:

> qwinsta /SERVER:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
SESSIONNAME       USERNAME                 ID  STATE   TYPE        DEVICE
console                                     0  Conn    wdcon
rdp-tcp                                 65536  Listen  rdpwd
rdp-tcp#14        Administrator             1  Active  rdpwd

...and then terminate the desired session (I'm terminating the last row on the list above here):

> rwinsta 1 /SERVER:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
