Redhat – How to install automake and autoconf on RedHat Enterprise 5

I am attempting to install "uploadprogress" for a PHP application, and have failed on dependencies.

Firstly, on phpize, then php-devel, then on autoconf and automake.

I have tried yum, and various repositories, with no luck.

I think it's to do with the ultra-tight but annoying set up they have on Rackspace Cloud servers.

Does anyone know where I can find a repository that I can tell yum to look at that will contain php-devel, autoconf, automake, etc?

These should be installable via yum and the base RHEL repositories. Have you tried querying if they are already installed but not in your path? Also, have you successfully installed anything via yum?

To check what package you need to install:

[user@server]# yum whatprovides autoconf automake
Loaded plugins: rhnplugin, security
autoconf-2.59-12.noarch : A GNU tool for automatically configuring source code.

You have installed the latest version that has been configured, tested and verified to work with your distro.

Instead of using Yum, you will need to download the latest version from http://curl.haxx.se/download.html and roll it yourself.

You don't need to resompile if you've got dynamic loading support enabled.

You've already got the php-mysql rpm installed - so either it's not configured properly your php.ini or it has dependencies which have not been installed (which is a tricky scenarion to create).

running rpm --verify php-mysql will perform some basic checks in the install.

rpm -q -l will list the files in the rpm:

[symcbean@example ~]$ rpm -q -l php-mysql
/etc/php.d/mysql.ini
/etc/php.d/mysqli.ini
/etc/php.d/pdo_mysql.ini
/usr/lib/php/modules/mysql.so
/usr/lib/php/modules/mysqli.so
/usr/lib/php/modules/pdo_mysql.so

Check these files exist and are readable by your webserver uid (rpm -q -l php-mysql | xargs ls -l).

Check that the location of the php modules matches the extension_dir in your php.ini, which should also have dl enabled. NB use phpinfo() to findout where your php.ini is located.

The EPEL service provides third party add-ons to RHEL, not the RH supplied packages. But you can download individual rpms (if you have a current RHEL subsription from access.redhat.com). If you don't have a subscription (and therefore you're not bothered about RH support), the Centos rpms should be binary compatible (see link for dependencies). There are also other people providing RH compatible rpms (try rpm search)
