I have an HP ProLiant, DL160 G6. I have no OS installed on this server yet, no monitor attached to it. I can only connect to it via IPMI protocol, using the web or ssh, with user Operator, which is not an administrator (that means I have no access to Virtual KVM).
iLO version/type is 100i.
Is there a possibility to reset the administrator password for admin user through this port? If not, would it be possible using the serial port?
When you first turn the server on, there's a a section during startup that says "Push F8 to enter iLO Configuration" (might be some other function key). Do that and fill in the network information and setup a login.
Once that's done, open a web browser at your computer and enter the IP you configured. It should be very self explanatory from there.
The iLO configuration is not stored on disk, and not in the BIOS, so there's a decent chance it isn't clear. Also, how your VPN works and how to use it is completely outside the scope of using iLO.
Are you seeing anything in the system's IML logs? Do you have the management agents installed for the hardware?
What specific OS and model of ProLiant server are you using? If you have the agents installed, you should be getting some information relevant to the lockups or possibly tripping the ASR watchdog timer.
For the VSP. have you made the necessary changes to the kernel command line and Grub to output to the console?
For ILO, the model and firmware revision makes a difference. Current ILO2 and ILO3 firmware allows for an Infinite idle timeout under Access Options.

ipmitool -I open user set password 2 ADMINYou can use the above ipmitool command to reset the password, but you will need local access -- not over KVM. You can use any linux based liveCD/liveUSB to do this.
The command is basically setting the Admin's (user id: 2) password to ADMIN. You can then login as ADMIN/ADMIN
EDIT: I just noticed that you can "only" connect via IPMI. Hmmm that might be difficult. Is this because it's in a different location or you just haven't connected the monitor to it ?
