Solaris WANboot & Jumpstart SPARC/x86

I need to setup a Solaris WANboot and a Solaris jumpstart server for both SPARC and x86 architectures. Can I setup both on a single machine (SPARC or x86) or do I need a separate SPARC and x86 machine to jumpstart a SPARC respectively a x86 client?

As far as I know the architecture of a WANboot server doesn't matter, as long as the correct Solaris flash archive is used.

Both can be set up on a single machine. You'll need separate binary executables for each ISA, of course, and separate binary boot files for each supported architecture. The jumpstart/diskless boot server is basically acting as a network file store (albeit with some special, not filesystem protocols), so its architecture can be separate from the client.

There are two options: xauth + magic cookies, where you set the DISPLAY variable to the host you want to see the gui on:

from client-machine ssh to server-machine,

export DISPLAY=client-machine:0
xterm

On the other hand, a much better and easier solution is using the -X option for ssh. This sets up an automatic tunnel for forwarding the X connection. You'll see your DISPLAY variable has already been set upon ssh to the localhost with a high display number: usually around 10.

However, you must enable X forwarding. As I recall, it is disabled by default on solaris. Go into your sshd_config and ensure you have it enabled.

P.S. You may find it useful to know that while the solaris ssh client only uses -X, the standard linux client also has -Y for trusted connections. This means that for some applications, only -Y will work (I've had issues with Java GUIs)

Their stability, especially when coupled with 75xx-aware OSs such as Server 2008 R2 and RHEL 5.5, is significantly better than their other x86 counterparts. These chips are available in servers by all the main vendors such as HP's DL580 G7, DL 980 G7 and Dell/IBM equivalents. Hope this helps.
