Sql-server – Can Windows Nano server run SQL server

I am investigating the possibility of running a Nano server for a web service. I have been trying to find out if it can run an instance of SQL server 2016 in addition to IIS.

I wouldn't be surprised if the answer was a resounding "NO!", since SQL Server requires lots of features to be enabled in the underlying operating system (even installing it on a Server Core edition can be quite painful).

But since there isn't actually any information about this specific issue (and WS2016 is still being developed, including the Nano Server edition), the question is currently unanswerable. It will ultimately depend on whether Microsoft will support it or not.

It is early days for Nano Servers. What we have right now is an early preview and only a very limited number of features is supported. IIS and SMTP are not among them.

Get-WindowsFeature is from the Server Manager module which is not enabled on Nano

You can use Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature to enable some, but that doesn't really help.

As long as we don't have any additional packages we can not add more features to the server.

You're using SQL login, right? Not Windows authentication. SPN is used for Windows authentication (Kerberos) when both the client and server are members of the domain.

I think there's another problem that prevents you from connecting to your SQL server. Might be routing issue,firewall, port configuration for SQL service or antivirus. Try disabling the Windows Firewall on SQL server and connecting again to see if it's related to firewall. Same goes for antivirus.

For port configuration, you can verify it using SQL Server Configuration Manager and running netstat -an | find /i "1433" command to see if port is Listening.
