Sql-server – Install MSSQL and .Net Framework 3.5 in Windows Server 2012

I have downloaded Windows Server 2012 VHD (Hyper-V VM) and wanna install MSSQL 2012 in it. But it's failing asking for "NetFX3".

Googling about it I discovered it's .Net Framework 3.5 and lots of people had the same problem. Everybody say to use Add Roles and Features Wizard to install it, but also lots of people had problem in this way. Installation files are required.

In this VM I have no access to Internet. Also many reported the same. And the suggestion was to use Win2012 ISO to install it. But I have no ISO, I downloaded VHD.

I downloaded .NetFramework 3.5 offline installation file, but when I execute it I receive an error asking to install it Server Manager, which uses Add Roles and Features Wizard.

I also found the very popular command dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /all /Source:d:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess but it requires the ISO.

I extracted offline installation files and pointed it as source, but I'm getting error saying source wasn't found. Both Wizard and command report the same error. As source I used E:\install\dotnetfx35\wcu\dotNetFramework\dotNetFX35\x64 and all folders below the tree.

I'm now stuck. Installing .Net Framework shouldn't be so troubling. Anybody knows how I can install it from its offline installation file, without Internet and witout Win2012 ISO?

I solved it. I couldn't download the ISO because live is blocked in our intranet. But I talked to the department responsible for ISOs and they provided it to me.

Normally you just need to make sure that you have .NET installed and then Windows Update will lead you through all of the update. However I've run into failures like yours on about 1 in 50 servers, so the trick is to figure out the best path to navigate for your situation.

You're on the right path. Here's what I suggest:

For the WS08 server, I would uninstall the .NET Framework completely and then build back up again. To do so, use Add/Remote programs to uninstall any of the service packs that you see there. Then from Server Manager go to -> Roles -> Web Server (IIS) -> Remove Role Services -> and remove "ASP.NET" and ".NET Extensibility" (and accept the prompt to remove dependencies). After that completes, perform a reboot if it asks for one.

Then, from Server Manager again, add a role service and add those back again. Then use Windows Update, but step through the service packs in order. Don't assume that the cumulative installs will work since you already know that you're a fringe case.

For the Vista computer, if you haven't already, I suggest the Windows Update path there too. If that dead-ends, then start here: http://www.microsoft.com/net/Download.aspx. Make sure that you do have .NET 2.0 installed. (just check c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727 and make sure it has the full set of files.).

You can use Powershell to show the available Windows Features:

Import-Module ServerManager
Get-WindowsFeature | out-file C:\WindowsFeatures.txt -width 300

Because the data is a long and wide it is better to pipe it into a file and review it there.

it shows that '.NET Framework 3.5 Features' are available, but '.NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)' has been removed.

However, the files are still on the DVD, you can use:

dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /source:D:\sources\sxs /all /LimitAccess

or the PowerShell 'Add-WindowsFeature' commandlet to install it:

Add-WindowsFeature –name NET-Framework-Core -source D:\sources\sxs

Edit: On Server 2012 R2 with Update 1 installed (KB2919355) this doesn't work if you are using the original DVD/ISO. You need a DVD or ISO which includes that update. For new installations, install .NET 3.5 before you apply KB2919355.
