SSD + LUKS performance comparison

Our laptops and portable drives must be LUKS encrypted. LUKS doesn't really seem to cause much performance loss on normal laptop hard drives (7200RPM) for us. With the crazy data rates you get with SSDs, is that still true?

I searched around a little, but I didn't see any actual comparisons between LUKS vs. non-LUKS on SSDs.

I'm currently seeing 150MB/s performance with my SSD and LUKS. That is a 50% loss since without LUKS my SSD will get 300MB/s read performance.

I'm using Fedora 17 with Linux kernel 3.4.

There are 3 things that come to mind. Firstly, what brand / model SSD are you using?? There have been some problems recently with controllers from certain manufactures. Secondly, Is TRIM enabled. Win7 will enable TIRM (if required) at installation time. So if the SSD was not present then, it may not be enabled. To check:

In an Elevated command Prompt windows, type the following:

fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify
Results explained below:
DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled)
DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled)

Thirdly, Does the SSD have the correct sector alignment. To check the alignment of your SSD's partition:

In Windows, run msinfo32
click on: components -> storage -> disks

Look for your SSD and check the partition starting offset.

It needs to be divisible by 4096 otherwise the alignment is not correct.

The cached reads aren't from the underlying device. They aren't representative at all of the performance of the different devices, neither of which could come anywhere near that kind of throughput. Ignore that number.
