Switch – Admin mode on Procurve Switches

Not being a network expert, I spent some time configuring my network, until I found my mistake: On my HP ProCurve Switch 1810G, I thought that "Admin mode" means whether the administrative interface can be accessed from this port. Well, it means whether the port is enabled or not. Extract from the help function:

Admin Mode – Select to enable the port-control administration state. Click to enable and have the port participate in the network.(Default : Enabled )

Well, of course I didn't read the help, because I didn't doubt it's for the adminsitrative interface and suspected an error somewhere else.

Anyway, I am wondering if that is a commonly used term for enabling/disabling ports or if HP just wanted to make my life harder? I can't understand why this option isn't just called "Enable port"!?

It's an HP gui-ism. It could certainly be worded better.

The Cisco equivalent is shutdown and the way that it displays a port in that state is 'Administratively disabled'.

According to the configuration you posted, you only have one port (24) of the switch configured for vlan2. If your laptop and the modem are on different ports (which I presume they are) then both ports need to be untagged members of vlan 2 for this to work.

For example, if the other device is on port 25 you should have:

vlan 1
name "DEFAULT_VLAN"
untagged 1-23,26
no untagged 24-25
ip address 128.1.146.204 255.255.0.0
exit
vlan 2
name "Airspeed"
untagged 24-25
ip address 77.75.00.51 255.255.255.248
exit
no aaa port-access authenticator active

instead of what you posted.

Last time I was working with a lot of distributed non-cisco switches and had to do tasks like this budgeting was an issue so I couldn't use any of the paid solutions for it. I went back to the basics and used expect.

It worked well in my situation, however if you don't have your trunk ports all on the same port of a switch it may get complicated depending on your amount of variance.

These days there is also expectpy for those who prefer python to tcl.

I'll admit the option is a bit arcane for most admins I've worked with. Also you're correct RANCID watches for config updates, it doesn't deploy changes.
