Ubuntu – Cannot establish a network connect to VMWare Fusion VM

I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (not the server edition) with VMWare Fusion 3.0.0 and I trying to get my Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64 VM working. I am using a bridged connection, and I have an internet connection FROM the Ubuntu VM (I can download updates, ping websites, etc), but I cannot connect TO the Ubuntu box from any other device on my network.

I am trying to get Mongrel up on the Ubuntu VM for some Rails stuff, but it's not working. I know Mongrel/Rails is not the problem because if I start the server on the Ubuntu VM, background the process, and then wget the index page, it works. I just cannot connect to the site from another IP.

I have tried using a static IP and a DHCP IP configuration on the Ubuntu VM, neither work (for incoming connections, both work for outwards). I have port scanned the Ubuntu VM, and it appears that all ports are closed. However, the Ubuntu VM does respond to pings.

I noticed a similar question here:

If the VM is responding to pings then the virtual network bridging is working. I would proceed by making certain that there are no software firewalls in place on either the Ubuntu VM, the Host OSX platform or your physical network that might be blocking the specific traffic (port\protocol) that you are trying to use.

There is a useful explanation and discussion on Fusion's network modes on the Vmware Communities website here that may give you some additional pointers, in particular it seems that there may be some issues with some Wireless LANs.

I was able to get bonded nics/link aggregates to work.

edit /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/boot.sh and look for the vmnet-bridge section and edit accordingly.

vmnet-bridge puts itself in background (daemon mode)
Bridge to host network interface 'en0'.
"$LIBDIR/vmnet-bridge" -d /var/run/vmnet-bridge-vmnet0.pid vmnet0 en0
Bridge to host network interface 'en1'
"$LIBDIR/vmnet-bridge" -d /var/run/vmnet-bridge-vmnet2.pid vmnet2 en1

Bridge to the primary host network interface (which can change over time).

Edit the vmx file for your virtual machine and change 

ethernet0.connectionType = "bridged"
ethernet0.vnet = "/dev/vmnet0"

to

ethernet0.connectionType = "custom"
ethernet0.vnet = "/dev/vmnet0"

make sure fusion isnt running and restart it with

sudo /Library/Application\ Support/VMware\ Fusion/boot.sh --restart 

Im not certain what speed im getting on the link in the VM, as task manager states it running at 10mb/s as does the driver. But I have network connectivity, which is all I wanted.

If there's nothing at /media/cdrom0, check to see where the CDROM is mounted by entering into the terminal: mount

This will show a list of all mounted filesystems. If the CDROM isn't mounted, try: mount /media/cdrom0

EDIT: I'm not sure why nothing is showing up in the CDROM. Try (as root) to umount it and remount it?

sudo umount /media/cdrom1
sudo mount /media/cdrom1

EDIT2: vmware-toolbox is only for X11. It adjusts the display size to match the window size and other such things. TO confirm that VMware tools are properly installed and running, restart them:

/etc/init.d/vmware-tools restart

If you are told that they are not (properly) configured and to run vmware-config-tools.pl, then they are not properly installed and you should run that script.
