I'm really in deep sh*t here. While running "pear install HTTP", my server get rebooted, when everything back, I continue my work, and…

$sudo pear install HTTP
ERROR: The default config file is not a valid config file or is corrupted.

$sudo pear list
ERROR: The default config file is not a valid config file or is corrupted.

$sudo pear 
ERROR: The default config file is not a valid config file or is corrupted.

I try aptitude purge php-pear, and even delete everything on /usr/share/php/ and install php-pear again, but the error still persist.

Oops… what did happen?

Had this error on Mac with MAMP. For me deleting .../MAMP/bin/php/php5.3.6/conf/pear.conf helped.

Turns out it was a open_basedir issue, which had the path /usr/share/pear instead of /usr/share/php.
I got it when I tried to require_once "/usr/share/php/Mail.php" and got an open_basedir error.
Changing it in /etc/php5/fpm.conf solved my problem.

If you want to change the ./configure options if a package, you need to rebuild the package. The easiest way to do this is run:

# apt-get install build-essential devscripts
# apt-get source php5
# cd php5-*
# vim debian/rules 
# debuild -us -uc -b

You should now find the rebuild packages in the directory above the source. You can install these using "dpkg -i php5_1.2.3-4_amd64.deb" where the filename is the list of packages you want to install.
