We use kvm on ubuntu 10.4 as virtualisation-solution (we have bash-scripted the whole networking, subneting, starting of vms…..

Is there a way to shutdown a kvm-guest without the usage of libvirt/virsh? A bash or python based solution would be great.

If you have started your VM with the monitor option (-monitor unix:/tmp/file.mon,server,nowait ), you can stop it by using echo 'system_powerdown' | socat - UNIX-CONNECT:/tmp/file.mon.

It send a ACPI signal to the VM, which can use it as you push your power button, and then do a shutdown.

Looking at the output of "help":

virsh # help autostart
  NAME
    autostart - autostart a domain

  SYNOPSIS
    autostart <domain> [--disable]

  DESCRIPTION
    Configure a domain to be automatically started at boot.

  OPTIONS
    [--domain] <string>  domain name, id or uuid
    --disable        disable autostarting

This requires that you defined the domain from a file (i.e., that the domain is persistent rather than transient).

Centos – qemu-kvm/virsh: No network connectivity whilst using bridged networking

The answer to this issue was that because I'd done a non-graphic install of Centos 6 minimal on the guests, the network interfaces had not been automatically set up to work. My lack of knowledge of virtualisation and Centos meant that I assumed that this would be taken care of for me, but I was incorrect in this assumption.

Fix: I needed to go into ifcfg-eth0 on the guests and turn on ONBOOT=yes and BOOTPROTO=dhcp, then restart the network adapter via ifdown eth0 then ifup eth0. After doing this, the guests received IP addresses and everything worked as expected.
