Unable to understand the folder /var/virusmails in Mac OS X

I was completing the instructions in finding MySQL's password, when I saw this

My var at Root has the folder /var/virusmails which name is strange.

The user of the folder is _amavisd which I do not know.
The same user has also the folder amavis such that

Amavis seems to be a virus-scanner provider.
However, I have not installed the files.
This suggests me that the files are built into OS X.

I am interested in which components use the virus-scanner in OS X. I have never noted it to be running.

Amavis is in the default installation of Mac OS X. It can be used with SMTP server like Postfix (also installed with mac os x).
But even if it comes with all Mac OS X installation, it is here to be used by Mac OS X server.
But of course, by configuring manually postfix and amavis on mac os x client you could use them.

There is a web page on Apple website about amavis. The doc is outdated as amavis now comes with OS X and don't have to be installed but it explains how it works and what it do.

Use the dscl command. This example would create the user "luser", like so:

dscl . -create /Users/luser
dscl . -create /Users/luser UserShell /bin/bash
dscl . -create /Users/luser RealName "Lucius Q. User"
dscl . -create /Users/luser UniqueID "1010"
dscl . -create /Users/luser PrimaryGroupID 80
dscl . -create /Users/luser NFSHomeDirectory /Users/luser

You can then use passwd to change the user's password, or use:

dscl . -passwd /Users/luser password

You'll have to create /Users/luser for the user's home directory and change ownership so the user can access it, and be sure that the UniqueID is in fact unique.

This line will add the user to the administrator's group:

dscl . -append /Groups/admin GroupMembership luser

Where is “/var/log/messages” on mac-osx

If you refer to the man entry of syslog.conf, I guess the line is just an example:

# Log anything (except mail) of level info or higher.
# Don't log private authentication messages!
*.info;mail.none;authpriv.none          /var/log/messages

If you want to use that directory in your configuration, you'll have to create it.

Edit: The actual syslog.conf on Mac OS X uses the system.log file.
