I would like to understand the access.log of the squid application, the various codes and what they mean for example

TCP-MISS/502

what does it mean and how does it come about?

Is there an appendix for this?

The log format is user-definable, but odds are good you're using the default native log format. The Squid cache FAQ describes the native log format in detail, including the result code you're asking about.

Something like

perl -p -e 's/^([0-9]*)/"[".localtime($1)."]"/e' < access.log

could help you with the last part (tail-ing the log). Found it on a Squid mailing list.

Squid had a bug with not caching requests that have the "Vary" header - this question has a detailed description of the issue with some more info, but here's the short version of it :

By analyzing the logs I was able to determine that the hash lookup key used during the store (i.e. the initial request) is different than the one used during the subsequent requests. This is why the subsequent lookups are cache misses.

As of now, the bug is fixed.
