Using Putty to connect to bastion…spawns lots of plink.exe

So I'm trying to get putty to work to allow me to connect through a bastion host. I have everything setup correctly because it successfully connected to my server through the bastion. All of the sudden though, I try to open my connection and hundreds of "plink" processes start up and I don't know why.

Settings for Putty:

Connection->SSH->Auth: Check "Allow Agent Forwarding"

Connection->Proxy: Proxy Type = Local Local Proxy Command = "plink.exe -l -agent -nc %host:%port"

Any insight as to what I could do to find out why its creating so many "plink" process would be appreciated. It seems like its in some sort of loop but not really sure where it could be happening.

Windows 7 Putty, PLink, Pagent version: 0.63

Turned out that the problem had to do with the Connection->Proxy settings were set for the Default Settings and my particular saved session. Once I removed them from the Default it stopped spawning multiple PLINK processes.

This outside of screen:

PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033]0;${USER}@${HOSTNAME}: ${PWD}\007"'

is equivalent to this inside screen:

PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033_${USER}@${HOSTNAME}: ${PWD}\033\\"'

Changing your case ${TERM}="screen" titlebar to

TITLEBAR='\[\033_\u@\h > ${NEW_PWD}\033\\\]'

will solve your problem.

Here's what worked for me:

My ~/.bashrc sets TERM=xterm (mine happens to be TERM=xterm-256colors) overriding screen's TERM=screen
I set PuTTY > Terminal > Features > Disable Application cursor keys mode to checked
I enter tput smkx at the Bash prompt
Now Ctrl-Arrow keys jump word-by-word
For informational purposes, if I do:
tput smkx | hexdump -c
I get
0000000 033 [ ? 1 h 033 =
and
tput rmkx | hexdump -c
gives me
0000000 033 [ ? 1 l 033 >

I think there's a way to rework this into something a little better, but it's what I've got so far and it seems to work.

Each window in a `screen' session emulates a VT100 terminal, with some extra functions added. The VT100 emulator is hard-coded, no other terminal types can be emulated.

And VT100s don't have Ctrl-Arrow keycodes.
