Virtualmin: “PHP execution via fcgid requires the Apache mod_fcgid module”

I have a CentOS server with Virtualmin on it. I have configured PHP the way I want it, using Apache mod_fastcgi. However, when I click "Re-check Config" in Virtualmin, I get

PHP execution via fcgid requires the Apache mod_fcgid module

This post says to change Default PHP execution mode to CGI, but I can't find such an option anywhere!

mod_fastcgi (www.fastcgi.com) is a 3rd-party module whose directives have a "FastCgi" prefix.

mod_fcgid http://httpd.apache.org/mod_fcgid/mod/mod_fcgid.html is an Apache module whose directives have a "Fcgid" prefix.

I advise that you remove mod_fastcgi and go with mod_fcgid.

That's great news for PHP, because then you can dump apache mpm-prefork and go with the better mpm-worker, by not installing mod_php, instead use php as fast cgi. For debian, this means:

• Remove apache2-mpm-prefork and libapache2-mod-php5.

• Add apache2-mpm-worker, libapache2-mod-fcgid, and php5-cgi. With php5-cgi, you don't need a custom fast cgi wrapper, you can use the php command-line itself directly (notice the /usr/lib/cgi-bin/php5) below.

• For mod_fcgid with PHP, note that PHP as FastCGI has its own facility for terminating after handling so many requests (see PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS). FcgidMaxRequestsPerProcess helps avoid sending additional requests to the wrapper application after it has handled its limit.

• Inside each virtual host or at global scope:

    FcgidInitialEnv PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS 200
    FcgidMaxRequestsPerProcess 200

• Then inside Directory:

    AddHandler fcgid-script .php
    FcgidWrapper /usr/lib/cgi-bin/php5 .php
    Options +ExecCGI

Oh man, I've been very stupid.

Apparently I just had it misconfigured at one point in time, and my browser had cached the incorrect response.

http://example.com/index.php then worked, probably because I only started trying that after I had gotten FastCGI PHP working, so no incorrect response was in cache.

In other words, the information in my original question is a working configuration for mpm-worker + PHP in mod-fcgid!

Apache .htaccess – Running PHP in CGI/FastCGI Mode on Shared Hosting

The problem is not that Apache rewrite rules in the .htaccess file won't work when running PHP as a CGI vs. an Apache module. It's just you can't use the .htacess file to set PHP values when it's ran as a CGI. Instead you have to have a separate php.ini file that has your settings changed in it. Within my own shared hosting account, which runs PHP as a CGI, I make use of FastCGI and have the following in my .htaccess file:

    AddHandler myphp-script .php
    Action myphp-script /cgi-bin/myphp.fcgi
</IfModule>

Then in my accounts /cgi-bin/ directory I place the myphp.fcgi script with chmod 755 containing:

#!/bin/sh

# This ensures PHP doesn't try to run it's own
# process manager.  
export PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN=0

# Execute PHP with my php.ini config file
exec /path/to/system/cgi-bin/php -c ~/myconf/php.ini

I still have a <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> section in my .htaccess file to handle rewriting some old URI paths to the new URI structure to maintain old links that are cached in search engines.
