Windows – Keep remote Hyper-v hosts in manager on close

I have a windows 8.1 machine that I have installed the Hyper-v role on. We also have a couple of 2012 servers running hyper-v.
I am currently managing them from my PC to make life easier.

When I connect to a remote host, I can see all of the VMs. However, when I close the manager, the connection to that host is not remembered, meaning when I next open it, I have to manually re-connect.

Not the end of the world, but was just wondering if there was a way to make the manager keep these connections as persistent so I don't have to go through this process on every start up?

This happens because the MMC provided by Microsoft you are launching is read-only. Create your own MMC that can save your changes:

In the Start menu, type MMC and press enter.
From the File menu, pick Add/Remove Snap-in.
Add the Hyper-V Manager Span-In.
Click OK.
Add all of your Hyper-V servers.
Close and save your MMC.

Hyper-V is not something that runs within Windows. It's a bare metal Hypervisor. The OS that used to be installed on the machine is actually now a VM. It's a special VM in that it has direct access to the hardware, doesn't show up in Hyper-V's management console, and other such; but it's still now a VM. So it doesn't get to see what the other machines are doing any more than they can see it.

Since Hyper-V still uses the base OS for servicing disk and network IO, you can pull those numbers from PerfMon. The Memory and Processor numbers obtains from PerfMon are skewed however and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Add the target account credentials to the Windows Credential Manager from the command line and try reconnecting:

cmdkey /add:TARGET /user:TARGET\USER /pass

Where TARGET is the remote Hyper-V host name and USER is the username added as an Administrator to the Hyper-V server.

As an aside, after having struggled with this configuration myself, I highly recommend running HVRemote on the client and server to aide in troubleshooting potential issues.
