Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 RDP Disconnection

I am unable to remote desktop to our Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 machine.

There are a few people about with similar issues but no answers around. Symantec End Point is installed but no network protection.

Using rdesktop in Linux I receive:

ERROR: send: Connection reset by peer
NOT IMPLEMENTED: PDU 12
ERROR: Connection closed

Where the "PDU XX" number changes on each connection.

In windows using the latest mstsc I receive:

The connection was lost due to a network error. Try connecting again. 
If the problem persists, contact your network Administrator.

Any ideas?

Drivers. Check for the latest drivers, DISABLE TCP OFFLOADING / CHIMNEY. Some drivers around are crappy like hell.

Try instead:

shutdown -r -f -m \\hostname -c "Comment goes here"

That's a bit drastic, but I've had the need to do that in a very similar environment to what you describe. I also open a cmd window and start a ping -t against the server to watch when the IP stack goes down and comes back up. This is a very useful indicator of activity when you don't have physical access to the server (or are too lazy to get up and walk over to it).

EDIT: (based on your comment) Ok, do this first and then try the above again (or restart it as normal if this works). See it that gets you farther. The -a will abort a system shutdown.

shutdown -a -m \\hostname

Windows – Error when connecting to Windows Server 2003 using Remote Desktop

Create the following Registry key

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server
Name: IgnoreRegUserConfigErrors
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1

Reboot the server, and try logging in via RDP.
