Windows – “System cannot find the file specified” trying to reinstall network driver

After uninstalling Symantec Enpoint Protection (manually) one computer (Windows XP) has an inoperative NIC; it shows up in device manager as conflicted.

I tried doing a windows repair from CD, which did not improve the situation. When I went to reinstall the drivers, driver installation failed with:

Cannot install this hardware

The system cannot find the file
specified

I've deleted the NIC in device manager without improvement.

Delete the following registry value and then restart the machine:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\Config

I found the solution in a forum. The original discoverer had to make a very expensive call to Microsoft support.

Try using DevCon, a Microsoft utility.

The DevCon utility is a command-line utility that acts as an alternative to Device Manager. Using DevCon, you can enable, disable, restart, update, remove, and query individual devices or groups of devices.

As long as you unpack your drivers into a default search path, you could call a rescan to capture all the devices not installed initially.

To install, the application has to be run in Vista Compatibility mode.

Download OpenVPN 2.1 and then :

1) After downloading, right-click on the file and select 'properties' then 'compatibility mode'
2) Select 'Windows Vista (Service Pack 1)'
3) For privilege level, select 'Run this program as administrator'
4) Click 'Apply' and then 'OK' to exit
5) Double-click on the installation file install. Agree to any questions that pop up. Click next where prompted.
Note: The installation of the TAP adapter can sometimes take up to a minute. Do not exit the installer while the TAP adapter is being processed.

Once the program is installed you need to mark OpenVPN-GUI in compatibility mode with Vista(SP1) and then mark checkbox "Run As an Administrator".
