I have a view (Index.cshtml) with a submit button. When the submit button is clicked, it calls an action (Action01) within the controller (TestController.cs) so at the end of the action I want to return to the caller (Index.cshtml) view with a custom view model as a parameter. How do I do this?

Results after first attempt using View("ViewName",model):

An error is raised, as the action is within the controller Test, so returning, it is searching for \Views\Tests\Index, and my Index page is in \Views\Home\Index.

Final solution:

I have used return View("ViewName", model), and I have changed my directories structure as it was the problem.

You can directly return a different view like:

return View("NameOfView", Model);

Or you can make a partial view and can return like:

return PartialView("PartialViewName", Model);

I found what I consider to be a bug in the framework, with a workaround. If you are trying to map a default route to an MVC 3 app with areas, your global.asax file might have something like this:

VB:

For some reason, the view engine does not appear to look in the area folder for the view file the same as if you type in the whole link. The strange thing is the code reaches the controller action. Here is the fix: Put this code in your controller action:

VB:

If Not Me.ControllerContext.RouteData.DataTokens.ContainsKey("area") Then
                Me.ControllerContext.RouteData.DataTokens.Add("area", "MyArea")
            End If

  if (!this.ControllerContext.RouteData.DataTokens.ContainsKey("area"))

Be careful if your model type is String because the second parameter of View(string, string) is masterName, not model. You may need to call the overload with object(model) as the second paramater:

Not correct :

protected ActionResult ShowMessageResult(string msg)
{
    return View("Message",msg);

Correct :

protected ActionResult ShowMessageResult(string msg)
{
    return View("Message",(object)msg);
}

OR (provided by bradlis7):

protected ActionResult ShowMessageResult(string msg)
{

}
