C# – Setting the default JSON serializer in ASP.NET MVC

I'm working on an existing application that has been partially converted over to MVC. Whenever a controller responds with a JSON ActionResult, the enums are sent as numbers opposed to the string name. It sounds like the default serializer should be JSON.Net, which should be sending the enums over as their names opposed to the integer representation, but that's not the case here.

Am I missing a web.config setting that sets this as the default serializer? Or is there another setting that needs to be changed?

In ASP.Net MVC4 the default JavaScript serializer which is used in the JsonResult class is still the JavaScriptSerializer (you can check it in the code)

I think you have confused it with the ASP.Net Web.API where JSON.Net is the default JS serializer but MVC4 doesn't use it.

So you need to configure JSON.Net to work with MVC4 (basically you need to create your own JsonNetResult), there are plenty of articles about it:

If you also want to use JSON.Net for controller action parameters so during the model binding then you need write your own ValueProviderFactory implementation.

And you need to register your implementation with:

ValueProviderFactories.Factories
    .Remove(ValueProviderFactories.Factories
                                  .OfType<JsonValueProviderFactory>().Single());
ValueProviderFactories.Factories.Add(new MyJsonValueProviderFactory());

In your action method, return Json(object) to return JSON to your page.

public ActionResult SomeActionMethod() {
  return Json(new {foo="bar", baz="Blech"});
}

Then just call the action method using Ajax. You could use one of the helper methods from the ViewPage such as

<%= Ajax.ActionLink("SomeActionMethod", new AjaxOptions {OnSuccess="somemethod"}) %>

SomeMethod would be a javascript method that then evaluates the Json object returned.

If you want to return a plain string, you can just use the ContentResult:

public ActionResult SomeActionMethod() {
    return Content("hello world!");
}

ContentResult by default returns a text/plain as its contentType.
This is overloadable so you can also do:

return Content("<xml>This is poorly formatted xml.</xml>", "text/xml");

Currently, errors within a view file are not detected until run time. To let you detect these errors at compile time, ASP.NET MVC projects now include an MvcBuildViews property, which is disabled by default. To enable this property, open the project file and set the MvcBuildViews property to true, as shown in the following example:

    <MvcBuildViews>true</MvcBuildViews>
  </PropertyGroup>

Note Enabling this feature adds some overhead to the build time.

You can update projects that were created with previous releases of MVC to include build-time validation of views by performing the following steps:

Open the project file in a text editor.
Add the following element under the top-most <PropertyGroup> element: <MvcBuildViews>true</MvcBuildViews>
At the end of the project file, uncomment the <Target Name="AfterBuild"> element and modify it to match the following:

    <AspNetCompiler VirtualPath="temp" PhysicalPath="$(ProjectDir)\..\$(ProjectName)" />
