The advantage to this is that it is applied to every call.
Create a class that implements IClientMessageInspector. In the BeforeSendRequest method, add your custom header to the outgoing message. It might look something like this:

Then create an endpoint behavior that applies the message inspector to the client runtime. You can apply the behavior via an attribute or via configuration using a behavior extension element.
Here is a great example of how to add an HTTP user-agent header to all request messages. I am using this in a few of my clients. You can also do the same on the service side by implementing the IDispatchMessageInspector.

Update: I found this list of WCF features that are supported by the compact framework. I believe message inspectors classified as 'Channel Extensibility' which, according to this post, are supported by the compact framework.
In your binding configuration, there are four timeout values you can tweak:

The most important is the sendTimeout
, which says how long the client will wait for a response from your WCF service. You can specify hours:minutes:seconds
in your settings - in my sample, I set the timeout to 25 minutes.
The openTimeout
as the name implies is the amount of time you're willing to wait when you open the connection to your WCF service. Similarly, the closeTimeout
is the amount of time when you close the connection (dispose the client proxy) that you'll wait before an exception is thrown.
The receiveTimeout
is a bit like a mirror for the sendTimeout
- while the send timeout is the amount of time you'll wait for a response from the server, the receiveTimeout
is the amount of time you'll give you client to receive and process the response from the server.
In case you're send back and forth "normal" messages, both can be pretty short - especially the receiveTimeout
, since receiving a SOAP message, decrypting, checking and deserializing it should take almost no time. The story is different with streaming - in that case, you might need more time on the client to actually complete the "download" of the stream you get back from the server.
There's also openTimeout, receiveTimeout, and closeTimeout. The MSDN docs on binding gives you more information on what these are for.

Logging is not necessarily turned on. Tracing and logging need to be enabled in WCF configuration (app.config or web.config). You can do this manually, or by clicking app.config and then selecting Edit WCF Configuration. If this item doesnt appear in context menu (happens in old versions of VS), you can find it in VS Tools menu or by running it manually (SvcConfigEditor.exe).
By default, messages are logged to files in directory from which application is ran. You can edit this in configuration editor once you enable logging. Editor will allow you to specify file path once you enable logging or tracing.
You can later use Microsoft Service Trace Viewer tool for going through the files, as large XMLs and are not user friendly. Viewer tool should come up itself once you double click log files, or you can run it manually (SvcTraceViewer.exe).
