C# – WebBrowser Control IE8 Compatibility Mode On/Off Switch

I am having a IE8 compatibility issue while using the WebBrowser control to navigate to a website. The strange thing is sometimes the website works, but more than likely it wont. I can refresh the page sometimes and it works as well.

Just going to the page in IE8 I experienced the same CSS rendering problems so I switched to compatibility mode and it refreshed and rendered correctly.

Is there a way to simulate this effect for the WebBrowser control. I want to be able to click a button and toggle the modes off and on like you can do in Internet Explorer.

Is this possible? If so, anyone know how?

Would this post on IEBlog about WebBrowser rendering modes and IE8 help? Seems like you have to set the rendering mode specific to your application using a key in the registry.

You can host the Flash ActiveX control in your WinForms app directly instead of using a browser control. We do this in our app and it works. Has a few quirks like ESC in full-screen mode doesn't actually exit full screen, but for most part works.

There's also an API (but poorly documented) for communicating between the SWF and the WinForms app. We haven't used it ourselves though.

Override intranet compatibility mode IE8

It is possible to override the compatibility mode in intranet.

For IIS, just add the below code to the web.config. Worked for me with IE9.

<system.webServer>
  <httpProtocol>
    <customHeaders>
      <clear />
      <add name="X-UA-Compatible" value="IE=edge" />
    </customHeaders>
  </httpProtocol>
</system.webServer>

Equivalent for Apache:

Header set X-UA-Compatible: IE=Edge

And for nginx:

add_header "X-UA-Compatible" "IE=Edge";

And for express.js:

res.set('X-UA-Compatible', 'IE=Edge')
