In Crystal Reports, what is the difference between a running total field and a summary field?

(In the Crystal IDE, Summary fields are located in Insert -> Summary. Running totals can be added in the Field Explorer)

In my experience, Running Total fields are basically enhanced Summary Fields.

Running Total fields can do everything Summary Fields can, except that Running Total fields can also do the following:

Evaluate for each record, on change of field, on change of group, or evaluate based on a formula.
Reset the summary on change of field, on change of group, based on a formula, or never.

Summary Fields, however, can be shown as a percentage of a field, so they're not without their uses (and they're a little easier to set up).

Running-Total Fields, in my experience, only work in the footer sections.

You will need to create a manual running total.

Add a formula field to the Details section that populates a Global variable with whatever you are trying to capture. Something like:

//use WhileReadingRecords if the values can be gathered as the report pulls in values from the database.  Otherwise, use WhilePrintingRecords. 
WhileReadingRecords;
Global Stringvar CurrentVers;
//logic here to capture what you want
CurrentVers:=...

Add another formula field to the Header section. Add these two lines to it:

WhilePrintingRecords;
Global Stringvar CurrentVers;

Conditional Running Total in Crystal Reports

I'm interpreting your question to mean that you want to add up all the negative values in one running total (RT_Neg) and all the positive values in another (RT_Pos). How about this:

Make the RT_Neg running total. Under Field to Summarize, sum your {Tbl1}.{Amount}. Under evaluate, enter "{Tbl1}.{Amount}<0" as your custom formula. Never reset.
Make the RT_Pos running total. Under Field to Summarize, sum your {Tbl1}.{Amount}. Under evaluate, enter "{Tbl1}.{Amount}>0" as your custom formula. Never reset.
Insert both running totals in the group footer (if you put them in the header, it may not sum properly)

Alternatively, you can:

Make a custom formula "If {Tbl1}.{Amount}<0 then {Tbl1}.{Amount} else 0" and make a running total based off that.

I think one of these 2 options will get you to your goal.
