Eclipse – Publish & Run Simple Web Project

I must be missing something really obvious but I just cannot work out how to publish & run a simple JavaScript & HTML project to an Apache server on a local VM.

I have tried the locally installed Eclipse help but it always seems to come to an end without filling in the full details of what is required and there is no summary that gives a start to finish overview of what is needed to complete what should be a straightforward task.

My project is simple, it is comprised of links to a single JavaScript file and a directory of HTML files. I have created a server, giving the details of the Apache server on the VM, as far as I can tell I now need to link the project with the server but I can't work out how to do this task. If I right click on the project and go to Run As/Configurations the Create, manage and run configurations window allows me to create a new configuration but the server select box contains no servers.

I really have no idea whether that is what I need to be doing but I have tried so many options that I am now completely lost.

In the server window it says 'started, synchronised' by the server but it isn't even attempting to write files to the server directory (which is mounted on my file system).

I am using 'Eclipse IDE for JavaScript Developers' v1.4.1, 'Eclipse Platform' v3.7.1.

Could anyone point me in the right direction for publishing and running a simple JavaScript & HTML project on a local Virtual Machine?

Publishing Static Content and JavaScript on Apache Server using Eclipse

Add Server

Window -> Show View -> Servers
Right click inside servers tab
New - > Server -> HTTP Server -> Next
add publishing dir: in my case (C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs)
Next -> add port (12345 in my case)

Create a web project

Switch to Web View (Right hand top corner)
Right click Project Explorer in left
New -> Project -> Web -> Static Web Project
Name the Project
Select Runtime Target as HTTP Server
Next -> Notice your default context root
Finish

Copy your current js and html files in the 'WebContent' directory in Project Explorer.

In Servers Tab

Right click HTTP Server
Add - Remove -> Add your project -> Finish
Right click Http Server -> Publish 4 done!

You should be able to see your stuff in publishing directory. you can access the page at

http://localhost:/context_root

The Xmx argument is the amount of memory Eclipse will get (in simple terms). With -Xmx4g, it gets 4 GB of RAM, etc.

Note:

Referring to the jvm.dll has advantages:

Splash screen coming up sooner.
Eclipse.exe in the process list instead of java.exe.
Firewalls: Eclipse wants access to the Internet instead of Java.
Window management branding issues, especially on Windows and Mac.

From version 4.8 (Photon) an up there was a steady speed gain after each version.
The main platform was optimized every release to load faster, enable more features for the dark theme and to add more features for newer Java versions for the Java development tools.
Especially with-in the last 3 versions the startup time was increased a lot. There should be a significant increase in start-up time with the newest version of Eclipse 2020-12.

In my experience it started a lot faster with each new version.
But: There are still plug-ins which do not follow the new way of using the Eclipse API and are therefore still slow to start.
Since the change to Java 11 as the minimum runtime version starting from Eclipse version 2020-09 at least the core system uses the newer features of the JVM. It is up to the providers of the other plug-ins to upgrade to newer APIs and to use the full power of modern CPUs (e.g. concurrent programming model).

Java – How to set the java.library.path from Eclipse

Don't mess with the library path! Eclipse builds it itself!

Instead, go into the library settings for your projects and, for each jar/etc that requires a native library, expand it in the Libraries tab. In the tree view there, each library has items for source/javadoc and native library locations.

Specifically: select Project, right click -> Properties / Java Build Path / Libraries tab, select a .jar, expand it, select Native library location, click Edit, folder chooser dialog will appear)

Messing with the library path on the command line should be your last ditch effort, because you might break something that is already properly set by eclipse.
