Ios – getting a “Auto Layout still required after executing -layoutSubviews” error every time the app launches now

Since I added the following code, every time my app opens this UITableViewController it crashes:

 self.noArticlesView = [[UIView alloc] init];
 self.noArticlesView.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = NO;
 self.noArticlesView.backgroundColor = [UIColor colorWithRed:0.961 green:0.961 blue:0.961 alpha:1];

 [self.view addSubview:self.noArticlesView];

 [self.view addConstraint:[NSLayoutConstraint constraintWithItem:self.noArticlesView attribute:NSLayoutAttributeTop relatedBy:NSLayoutRelationEqual toItem:self.view attribute:NSLayoutAttributeTop multiplier:1.0 constant:0.0]];
 [self.view addConstraint:[NSLayoutConstraint constraintWithItem:self.noArticlesView attribute:NSLayoutAttributeBottom relatedBy:NSLayoutRelationEqual toItem:self.view attribute:NSLayoutAttributeBottom multiplier:1.0 constant:0.0]];
 [self.view addConstraint:[NSLayoutConstraint constraintWithItem:self.noArticlesView attribute:NSLayoutAttributeLeading relatedBy:NSLayoutRelationEqual toItem:self.view attribute:NSLayoutAttributeLeft multiplier:1.0 constant:0.0]];
 [self.view addConstraint:[NSLayoutConstraint constraintWithItem:self.noArticlesView attribute:NSLayoutAttributeTrailing relatedBy:NSLayoutRelationEqual toItem:self.view attribute:NSLayoutAttributeRight multiplier:1.0 constant:0.0]];

And it gives me this error:

* Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Auto Layout still required after executing -layoutSubviews. UITableView's implementation of -layoutSubviews needs to call super.'

What on earth am I doing wrong? I call that code in tableView:numberOfRowsInSection: when there's 0 rows.

I was subclassing UIScrollView and received the same error message on iOS 7 (but not 8).

I was overriding layoutSubviews in a manner similar to the following:

- (void)layoutSubviews {
    [super layoutSubviews];
    // code to scroll the view
}

I resolved the issue by moving the call to super's layoutSubviews to be the last thing in the method:

- (void)layoutSubviews {
    // code to scroll the view
    [super layoutSubviews];
}

I encountered the same problem while manually adding constraints in code. In code, I was doing the following:

    [self setTranslatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints:YES];
    [self addSubview:someView];
    [self addSubview:someOtherView];
    [self addConstraint:...];
}

Hypothesis

From what I can tell, the issue is that when you disable translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints, UITableViewCell starts to use Auto Layout and naturally fails because the underlying implementation of layoutSublayersForLayer does not call super. Someone with Hopper or some other tool can confirm this. Since you're using IB you're probably wondering why this is an issue... and that's because using IB automatically disables translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints for views that it adds constraints to (it will automatically add a width and height constraint in their place).

Solution

My solution was to move everything to the contentView.

   [self.contentView addConstraint:...];
}

I'm not 100% sure if this will work in Interface Builder, but if you push everything off of your cell (assuming that you have something directly on it) then it should work. Hope this helps you!

You shouldn't set translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints to NO for table views, their cells, or table header and footer views (or for your controller's self.view for that matter). It's ok to use constraints for views inside those views (the content view of cells or the header and footer views). I added a simplified version of your code to viewDidLoad, and it worked as expected. Note that you need to give the footer view a height and an x position (the y position and the width are ignored),

    [tempFooter addConstraints:[NSLayoutConstraint constraintsWithVisualFormat:@"V:|[atext]|" options:0 metrics:nil views:dict]];
    self.tableView.tableFooterView = tempFooter;

I'm not sure what you were trying to accomplish with your constraint, tvatt3. The multiplier (you have 5) doesn't do anything with a top or left constraint since the value of those attributes is 0. I used the visual constraints, rather than the method you used, but when I used your code to add the constraints, it worked also .
