Ios – Storyboard – Hiding top bar of navigation controller programmatically

I'm using a storyboard and I'm trying to hide a top bar of my main navigation controller when a certain button is pressed (or function is called). I know I have to initialize an object referring to a navigation controller from a storyboard (using identifiers), but when I send the setNavigationBarHidden message to this newly created object nothing really happens on screen.

UIStoryboard *storyboard = [UIStoryboard storyboardWithName:@"MainStoryboard" bundle:nil];
UINavigationController *navController = (UINavigationController*) [storyboard instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier:@"MyNavController"];

[navController setNavigationBarHidden:YES animated:YES];

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Finally solved it. You should always hide navigation bar only through viewController.

In my question above I instantiated a whole new navigationController which didn't point at the real navController on the screen. You can obtain the "real" one through the view controller like this:

[viewController.navigationController setNavigationBarHidden:YES animated:YES];

The nicest solution I have found is to do the following in the first view controller.

Objective-C

- (void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated {
    [self.navigationController setNavigationBarHidden:YES animated:animated];
    [super viewWillAppear:animated];

- (void)viewWillDisappear:(BOOL)animated {
    [self.navigationController setNavigationBarHidden:NO animated:animated];
    [super viewWillDisappear:animated];

override func viewWillAppear(_ animated: Bool) {
    self.navigationController?.setNavigationBarHidden(true, animated: animated)
    super.viewWillAppear(animated)
}

override func viewWillDisappear(_ animated: Bool) {

    super.viewWillDisappear(animated)

This will cause the navigation bar to animate in from the left (together with the next view) when you push the next UIViewController on the stack, and animate away to the left (together with the old view), when you press the back button on the UINavigationBar.

Please note also that these are not delegate methods, you are overriding UIViewController's implementation of these methods, and according to the documentation you must call the super's implementation somewhere in your implementation.

Ios – presentViewController and displaying navigation bar

It is true that if you present a view controller modally on the iPhone, it will always be presented full screen no matter how you present it on the top view controller of a navigation controller or any other way around. But you can always show the navigation bar with the following workaround way:

Rather than presenting that view controller modally present a navigation controller modally with its root view controller set as the view controller you want:

MyViewController *myViewController = [[MyViewController alloc] initWithNibName:nil bundle:nil];
UINavigationController *navigationController = 
    [[UINavigationController alloc] initWithRootViewController:myViewController];

//now present this navigation controller modally 
[self presentViewController:navigationController
                   animated:YES
                   completion:^{

                        }];

You should see a navigation bar when your view is presented modally.
