Javascript – How to sort a list alphabetically using jQuery

I'm a bit out of my depth here and I'm hoping this is actually possible.

I'd like to be able to call a function that would sort all the items in my list alphabetically.

I've been looking through the jQuery UI for sorting but that doesn't seem to be it. Any thoughts?

Something like this:

var mylist = $('#myUL');
var listitems = mylist.children('li').get();
listitems.sort(function(a, b) {
   return $(a).text().toUpperCase().localeCompare($(b).text().toUpperCase());
})
$.each(listitems, function(idx, itm) { mylist.append(itm); });

Above code will sort your unordered list with id 'myUL'.

The sorted() function takes a key= parameter

newlist = sorted(list_to_be_sorted, key=lambda d: d['name'])

Alternatively, you can use operator.itemgetter instead of defining the function yourself

For completeness, add reverse=True to sort in descending order

Javascript – How to check if an element is hidden in jQuery

Since the question refers to a single element, this code might be more suitable:

// Checks CSS content for display:[none|block], ignores visibility:[true|false]
$(element).is(":visible");

// The same works with hidden
$(element).is(":hidden");

It is the same as twernt's suggestion, but applied to a single element; and it matches the algorithm recommended in the jQuery FAQ.

We use jQuery's is() to check the selected element with another element, selector or any jQuery object. This method traverses along the DOM elements to find a match, which satisfies the passed parameter. It will return true if there is a match, otherwise return false.
