I'm having trouble adding this repo http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/ under Settings > Maven > Repositories. It also says Nexus Service or Artifactory URL. How can I check if the URL is one of these types?
http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/ is the URL I use in NetBeans for Maven, and it works there.
From version 14.0 onwards, the path to the setting dialog is slightly different, a General submenu has been added between Editor and Appearance as shown below
From IntelliJ 8.1.2 onwards, this option is in File | Settings1. Within the IDE Settings section of that dialog, you'll find it under Editor | Appearance.
You can add local dependencies directly (as mentioned in build maven project with propriatery libraries included) like this:

Update
In new releases this feature is marked as deprecated but still working and not removed yet ( You just see warning in the log during maven start). An issue is raised at maven group about this https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MNG-6523 ( You can participate and describe why this feature is helpful in some cases). I hope this feature remains there!
If you are asking me, as long as the feature is not removed, I use this to make dependency to only one naughty jar file in my project which is not fit in repository. If this feature is removed, well, there are lots of good answers here which I can chose from later!

This repository is already used by default and is hardcoded, you don't need to add it manually. If you want to use any other repository, the easiest way would be to define it directly in the
pom.xmlfile or in your settings.xml. In either way IDEA will load these settings automatically.
