Ruby-on-rails – Best way to find a single record using ActiveRecord 3 / Arel

Where I used to do this:

Foo.find_by_bar('a-value')

I can now do this:

Foo.where(:bar => 'a-value').limit(1).first

Is this recommended? Is this the best way? Should I continue to use the "old" way because it continues to be useful syntactic sugar, or is there an Even Better way I can do that now, which will support chaining and all the other good stuff?

To get a copy, use the clone (or dup for rails 3.1+) method:

# rails < 3.1
new_record = old_record.clone

#rails >= 3.1
new_record = old_record.dup

Then you can change whichever fields you want.

ActiveRecord overrides the built-in Object#clone to give you a new (not saved to the DB) record with an unassigned ID.
Note that it does not copy associations, so you'll have to do this manually if you need to.

Rails 3.1 clone is a shallow copy, use dup instead...

Ruby – What’s the best way to model recurring events in a calendar application

I would use a 'link' concept for all future recurring events. They are dynamically displayed in the calendar and link back to a single reference object. When events have taken place the link is broken and the event becomes a standalone instance. If you attempt to edit a recurring event then prompt to change all future items (i.e. change single linked reference) or change just that instance (in which case convert this to a standalone instance and then make change). The latter cased is slightly problematic as you need to keep track in your recurring list of all future events that were converted to single instance. But, this is entirely do-able.

So, in essence, have 2 classes of events - single instances and recurring events.
