Rest – Calling REST web services from a classic asp page

I'd like to start moving our application business layers into a collection of REST web services. However, most of our Intranet has been built using Classic ASP and most of the developers where I work keep programming in Classic ASP. Ideally, then, for them to benefit from the advantages of a unique set of web APIs, it would have to be called from Classic ASP pages.

I haven't the slightest idea how to do that.

You could use a combination of JQuery with JSON calls to consume REST services from the client

if you need to interact with the REST services from the ASP layer you can use

MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP

like:

You can call the Search webservice. Thihs isn't quite as straightforward as calling a Url like the Google appliance, but it's not daunting.

In MOSS 2007, the Url is http://portalname/_vti_bin/Search.asmx. The method you will probably want to use is Query. This will return results as an Xml Document. From there, you can apply your XSL and display inline on your custom search page.

One solution would be to use IIS Manager to configure the website (created for your ASP.NET app by Visual Studio) and add a virtual directory for each of the common folders so that (by the 'virtual' nature of the virtual directory) they will 'appear' to be in the same root folder as your ASP.NET app.

You can probably script IIS or edit an XML file if you need to do this in bulk, and I'm sure there must be an even more elegant way to do something similar that doesn't require to much mouse work!
