FTP Error 530 User cannot login

I am trying to FTP to a new FTP site I setup with IIS 7.0 for the Windows Server Web (64-bit) edition. But I get the above error when I try to login to this site. But I can login to my other FTP sites.

Also, when I select this website from IIS Manager, the FTP section does not display in the middle section although it does display in Action panel. And I cannot successfully login to this FTP site either.

I have checked and I have Log on locally selected. I do not have allow only anonymous connections. I have Access this computer from the network selected.

I restarted my IIS and FTP services also.

The one different thing I noticed about this website in IIS different from the other site that has FTP working is that this one there are 3 virtual directories beneath the site. And that when I click on any one of these 3, then the FTP strip does appear in the center pane. Make sense?

How can I debug cause of this error? Any SW tools I can use?

Have you tried logging in from the FTP server? If you do this, and have "Show detailed messages from local requests" enabled under FTP Messages, then you'll get a clearer idea as to why the login if failing. In my case I got the following message (I am using IIS Manager Users, and Passthrough authentication)

530-User cannot log in.
 Win32 error:   Access is denied.
 Error details: Filename: \\?\C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\config\redirection.config
 Error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions

To solve this I gave the NETWORK SERVICES user read only access to the config directory specified in the error message. I'm not 100% sure this is the right thing to do, but it certainly fixed this issue for me.

I have a Windows 2008 server that I'm working on, so my answer is not completely the same as what the OP has on a Windows 2003 server.

Here is what I did (recording this here so I can find it later).

I was having this same issue:

In my Web.config file, I had this section:

    <authentication mode="Windows" />
    <authorization>
        <allow users="*" />
        <deny users="?" />
    </authorization>
</system.web>

Under IIS, all of these seems to be solved under the Authentication icon.

Edit Permissions: Make sure your ASP.NET account has permission. Mine was not originally added.

Now go into the features of Authentication:

Enable Anonymous Authentication with the IUSR:

Enable Windows Authentication, then Right-Click to set the Providers.

NTLM needs to be FIRST!

Next, check that under Advanced Settings... the Extended Protection is Accept and Enable Kernel-mode authentication is CHECKED:

Once I did this, I went back to my web application, clicked the Browse link, and logged in without having to provide my credentials again.

C# – Login failed for user ‘IIS APPPOOL\ASP.NET v4.0’

Looks like it's failing trying to open a connection to SQL Server.

You need to add a login to SQL Server for IIS APPPOOL\ASP.NET v4.0 and grant permissions to the database.

In SSMS, under the server, expand Security, then right click Logins and select "New Login...".

In the New Login dialog, enter the app pool as the login name and click "OK".

You can then right click the login for the app pool, select Properties and select "User Mapping". Check the appropriate database, and the appropriate roles. I think you could just select db_datareader and db_datawriter, but I think you would still need to grant permissions to execute stored procedures if you do that through EF. You can check the details for the roles here.
