Eclipse – How to configure the proxy settings so that Eclipse can download new plugins

I am working with Eclipse 3.7, on an Windows XP environment behind a web proxy.

I want to install the Groovy plugin on a newly unzipped Eclipse Indigo (Eclipse Java EE Indigo M4).
I added the update site to the Available Software Site list.

But Eclipse is not able to retrieve the information of this plugin, and thus the installation is not possible…

If I put Native configuration in General > Network Connections, which does not have the Auth option selected, I get the following error when I trying to reach the update site:

So now, I select manual, I define all correct information for the three schemas (HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS): proxy, port, Auth, User and password.
However, when I try to reach the update site, Eclipse is indicating that he is Fetching children of Groovy Eclipse, but keep this status at 0%…

What is strange is that even if I put a wrong password in the General > Network Connections configuration, I don't get any error message.

My questions:

What is wrong in my configuration?
Is there another way to define the proxy configuration?
Is there a way to get more information, to know what Eclipse is trying to do (the workspace/.metadata/.log doesn't contain any useful information) ?

Another problem (minor however) is that the modifications of the proxy settings seem to be handled only after an Eclipse restart.

ps1: Using my browser, I can reach the update site, so it is not blocked by the proxy.

ps2: This problem is not related to this plugin, as Eclipse behaves the same way for other plugin.

ps3: Here is the content of the workspace/.metadata/.log when I start Eclipse and try to install the plugin (all these logs are written during the startup, none when Eclipse tries to access the update site)

If I add the following lines in my eclipse.ini file (because of that), it works:

But why? Does this problem still exists in Eclipse 3.7?

I had the same problem. I installed Eclipse 3.7 into a new folder, and created a new workspace. I launch Eclipse with a -data argument to reference the new workspace.

When I attempt to connect to the marketplace to get the SVN and Maven plugins, I get the same issues described in OP.

After a few more tries, I cleared the proxy settings for SOCKS protocol, and I was able to connect to the marketplace.

So the solution for me was to configure the manual settings for HTTP and HTTPS proxy, clear the settings for SOCKS, and restart Eclipse.

In the package explorer, in the upper right corner of the view, there is a little down arrow. Tool tip will say view menu. From that menu, select filters

Note that David Balažic's comment (July 2014) contradicts that criteria which was working six years ago:

The "same" workspace in Indigo (3.7.2) SR2 loads in 4 seconds, in Kepler SR2 (4.3.2) in 7 seconds and in Luna (4.4.0) in 10 seconds. All are Java EE bundles. Newer versions have more bundled plugins, but still the trend is obvious. (by "same" workspace I mean: same (additionally installed) plugins used, same projects checked out from version control).

Launching it with the latest JDK (Java 14 at the time of writing, which does not prevent you to compile in your Eclipse project with any other JDK you want: 1.4.2, 1.5, 1.6 older...)

The Xmx argument is the amount of memory Eclipse will get (in simple terms). With -Xmx4g, it gets 4 GB of RAM, etc.

Note:

Referring to the jvm.dll has advantages:

Splash screen coming up sooner.
Eclipse.exe in the process list instead of java.exe.
Firewalls: Eclipse wants access to the Internet instead of Java.
Window management branding issues, especially on Windows and Mac.

From version 4.8 (Photon) an up there was a steady speed gain after each version.
The main platform was optimized every release to load faster, enable more features for the dark theme and to add more features for newer Java versions for the Java development tools.
Especially with-in the last 3 versions the startup time was increased a lot. There should be a significant increase in start-up time with the newest version of Eclipse 2020-12.

In my experience it started a lot faster with each new version.
But: There are still plug-ins which do not follow the new way of using the Eclipse API and are therefore still slow to start.
Since the change to Java 11 as the minimum runtime version starting from Eclipse version 2020-09 at least the core system uses the newer features of the JVM. It is up to the providers of the other plug-ins to upgrade to newer APIs and to use the full power of modern CPUs (e.g. concurrent programming model).
