How to create a Virtual Com1 port in windows

I am developing a mobile app to run on a pocketpc. We have a mobile printer and card swipe that uses com1 to send and get info. I'm using the device emulator and want to test without the printer. How do I create a virtual com1 port to right to and read from? I tried com0com but the device emulator will not set that as serial 0.

If the PC has 2 serial ports (USB to serial adapters work well) you can use a null modem from the port shared with the emulator to another on the PC and attach Hyperterminal to it. That would give you the redirect pretty easily.

You can map two emulator ports to two real serial ports. See this article for details. The ports will appear as standard serial ports. If your dongle offers some extra functionality, it will not be available.

Linux – Create a virtual serial port connection over TCP

Try socat. Possible scenario:

socat  pty,link=/dev/virtualcom0,raw  tcp:192.168.254.254:8080&

socat creates TCP connection to 192.168.254.254:8080, so that everything, that will be written to /dev/virtualcom0 will be forwarded to 192.168.254.254:8080 and vice versa.

Another approach would be to use RFC2217 via ser2net on Linux sever side and RFC2217 driver on Windows side (for example http://www.hw-group.com/products/hw_vsp/index_en.html single port version). You can also try to get http://pyserial.sourceforge.net/ to work with ser2net.
