Macos – How to get the behavior of GNU’s readlink -f on a Mac

On Linux, the readlink utility accepts an option -f that follows additional links. This doesn't seem to work on Mac and possibly BSD based systems. What would the equivalent be?

Here's some debug information:

$ which readlink; readlink -f
/usr/bin/readlink
readlink: illegal option -f
usage: readlink [-n] [file ...]

MacPorts and Homebrew provide a coreutils package containing greadlink (GNU readlink). Credit to Michael Kallweitt post in mackb.com.

brew install coreutils

greadlink -f file.txt

Remove existing files from the repository:

find . -name .DS_Store -print0 | xargs -0 git rm -f --ignore-unmatch

Add this line:

.DS_Store

to the file .gitignore, which can be found at the top level of your repository (or create the file if it isn't there already). You can do this easily with this command in the top directory:

echo .DS_Store >> .gitignore

Then commit the file to the repo:

git add .gitignore
git commit -m '.DS_Store banished!'
