R – How to insert a new row in DB using RIA in code behind without DataForm

I have all of the data in the code below defined in XAML:

How do I insert a DB row without filing DataForm in the code above?

In your code-behind, you should be able to do the following:

// get a new entity
var attachment = new Attachment();

// initialize attachment properties as needed
this.ddsContAttachment.DataView.Add(attachment);

// when ready to submit the new record...
this.ddsContAttachment.SubmitChanges();

Its close but needs a little more work. First the code, you need an implementation of IValueConverter:-

Now you need to make an instance of this converter available in Xaml, a good place would be the UserControls Resources dictionary:-

   <UserControl.Resources>
     <utils:PhotoConverter x:Key="PhotoConverter" />
   </UserControl.Resources>

Then later on in your image:-

R – How to bind value to its parent element value

Try binding by specifying a relative source:

{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource
FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type
TextBlock}}}

This should bind to the first "TextBlock" type preceding MyControl.

UPDATE: The FindAncestor RelativeSource currently (as of Dec. 8, 2009) only works in WPF, NOT Silverlight.

But there is an request open (8/3/2009) with the Silverlight team to bring FindAncestor into a future version of Silverlight: Link

As shown you can enclose your MyControl within a TextBox Template. Then you can bind title using the following code:

{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource TemplatedParent}, Path=Text}
