Ruby – How to run a single test/spec file in RSpec

I want to be able to run a single spec file's tests — for the one file I'm editing, for example. rake spec executes all the specs. My project is not a Rails project, so rake spec:doc doesn't work.

Don't know if this matters, but here is my directory structure.

./Rakefile
./lib
./lib/cushion.rb
./lib/cushion
./lib/cushion/doc.rb
./lib/cushion/db.rb
./spec
./spec/spec.opts
./spec/spec_helper.rb
./spec/db_spec.rb

Or you can skip rake and use the 'rspec' command:

rspec path/to/spec/file.rb

In your case I think as long as your ./spec/db_spec.rb file includes the appropriate helpers, it should work fine.

If you're using an older version of rspec it is:

spec path/to/spec/file.rb

In RSpec 2, the /spec folder is always automatically on your load path. This means that all you need is:

require 'spec_helper'

at the top of your spec files. This will always load /spec/spec_helper.rb, and is the minimum you'll be able to get away with.

This means you don't need a horrid approach such as:

require File.join(File.dirname(File.dirname(__FILE__)), 'spec_helper.rb')

(which needs to be updated for different nesting levels).

Also you can add to your .rspec file the option: --require spec_helper, which will require this file in each spec file, without the manual require statement at the top.

I would recommend dropping your test database, then re-create it and migrate:

bundle exec rake db:drop RAILS_ENV=test
bundle exec rake db:create RAILS_ENV=test
bundle exec rake db:schema:load RAILS_ENV=test

After these steps you can run your specs:

bundle exec rspec spec

gerry3 noted that:

A simpler solution is to just run rake db:test:prepare

However, if you're using PostgreSQL this wont work because the rails environment gets loaded, which opens a database connection. This causes the prepare call to fail, because the DB cannot be dropped. Tricky thing.
